In the heart of Burgundy, Clos de Vougeot stands as a living testament to the ingenuity and devotion of the Cistercian monks. Founded in the 12th century by the monks of the Abbey of Cîteaux, this iconic walled vineyard (clos) embodies the pinnacle of Burgundian viticultural excellence.

Motivated by a pursuit of both spiritual and material perfection, the Cistercian monks mastered the exceptional terroirs of the Côte de Nuits. They introduced remarkably advanced techniques for their time, such as plot selection and the use of massive oak screw presses capable of pressing several tons of grapes. Their methodical, nature-respecting approach laid the foundations for modern viticulture in Burgundy.

The Château du Clos de Vougeot, built in the 16th century, served as the central hub for winemaking and storage within the clos. Though the château itself never produced wine, it symbolizes the union of spirituality, labor, and love for the land.

Today, Clos de Vougeot continues to shine through the work of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, founded in 1934. This brotherhood is dedicated to promoting Burgundy wines and preserving the region’s culinary and cultural traditions. The château regularly hosts events, tastings, and formal chapters, keeping alive the spirit of the Cistercian monks.

At HK Butler, we honor the rich legacy of Clos de Vougeot by offering Grand Cru wines that reflect centuries of Burgundian excellence. Each bottle sourced from this historic vineyard represents the enduring craftsmanship and reverence for terroir instilled by the monks of Cîteaux. With every sip, you are not only tasting a Grand Cru—you're experiencing a piece of living history.
