In the heart of Burgundy, the Hospices de Beaune represent a unique blend of heritage, wine, and solidarity. Founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor to the Duke of Burgundy Philip the Good, and his wife Guigone de Salins, the hospices were created to provide care and assistance to the poor during a time marked by the Hundred Years' War and the plague.
From the outset, the founders endowed the institution with vineyards to ensure its financial sustainability. Today, the Hospices' wine estate spans about 60 hectares, covering prestigious appellations in the Côte de Beaune such as Meursault, Pommard, and Chassagne-Montrachet. These exceptional terroirs produce wines that are highly sought after for their quality and character.
Every year, on the third Sunday of November, the famous Hospices de Beaune wine auction takes place. Organized by Sotheby’s, this charity auction features wine lots (228-liter barrels) from the current vintage. All proceeds are donated to hospitals and social causes in the region.
One of the most iconic lots is the “Presidents’ Barrel” ("Pièce des Présidents"), the proceeds of which go to charitable organizations selected annually. In 2024, this barrel—a Beaune Premier Cru—was sold for €360,000, with an additional donation of €100,000.
